On meritocracy

Meritocracy is usually defined as “government or the holding of power by people selected on the basis of their ability.” (Google dictionary) However, the definition merely scratches the surface in that it ignores a more fundamental force behind this apparently well-meaning system: the sociopolitical machine which defines and allocates merit itself. We tend to think we are able to do something; however, our ability gains legitimacy only through the grant of the merit-defining regime. In this sense, meritocracy should be understood as a zone of conflicts and struggle for the power to define ‘who is able and who is not.’
