The same argument applies to many other areas including teaching and writing, the performance of which requires an extended amount of time, I believe. Although some moments might flow smoothly and almost effortlessly, the overall performance is under constant monitoring, recalibrating, retrying, and restarting. For professionals, of course, the state of ‘flow’ appears more often and lasts longer. However it does not characterize the entire process. It is all about achieving ‘a shorter struggle and a quicker rebound, and a more effective orchestration of competing factors,’ rather than ‘sliding into the state of flow and staying there.’

“In other words, the idea that expert actions are in a placid state of flow – a state in which things seem to fall into place on their own – is a myth.”
